Rodents, reptiles and cage and aviary birds
Treatment of gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections, where clinical experience,
supported where possible by susceptibility testing of the causative microorganism, indicates enrofloxacin as the substance of choice.
Dosage:
Subcutaneous (s.c.) or intramuscular (i.m.) use.
Dogs and cats
5 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 1 ml/5 kg body weight, once daily for up to 5 days by subcutaneous injection.
Treatment may be started with the injectable product and continued with enrofloxacin in
tablets. The duration of treatment should be based on the approved treatment duration for
the appropriate indication contained in the product information for the tablet medicinal product.
Pigs (piglets)
2.5 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 1 ml/10 kg body weight, once
daily for 3 days by intramuscular injection.
Gastrointestinal tract infection or septicaemia caused by Escherichia coli: 5 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 2 ml/10 kg body weight, once daily for 3 days by intramuscular injection.
In pigs, the injection must be administered in the neck, at the base of the ear.
No more than 3 ml should be administered at each intramuscular injection site.
Rabbits
10 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 2 ml/5 kg body weight, once daily for 5–10 consecutive days by subcutaneous injection.
Rodents
10 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 0.4 ml/kg body weight, once daily for 5–10 consecutive days by subcutaneous injection. If necessary, depending on the severity of clinical signs, this dosage may be doubled.
Reptiles
Reptiles are ectotherms, i.e. they rely on external heat sources to maintain body temperature at the optimal level for the proper functioning of all organ systems. The metabolism of substances and the activity of the immune system therefore depend fundamentally on body temperature. Therefore, the veterinarian must be aware of the correct temperature requirements of the respective reptile species and the hydration status of the individual animal. In addition, it should be borne in mind that there are large differences in the pharmacokinetic behaviour of enrofloxacin between different species and this will further influence the choice of the correct dosage of this veterinary medicinal product. Therefore, the recommendations given here can only be used as a starting point for establishing the individual dose.
5–10 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 0.2–0.4 ml/kg body weight, once daily for 5 consecutive days by intramuscular injection.
In individual cases, an extension of the treatment interval up to 48 hours may be necessary. In complicated infections, higher dosages and longer treatment cycles may be required.
Due to the presence of the renal portal system in reptiles, it is prudent, where possible, to administer
substances in the anterior half of the body.
Cage and aviary birds
20 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight, corresponding to 0.8 ml/kg body weight, once daily for 5–10 consecutive days by intramuscular injection. In complicated infections, higher doses may be required.
