Avalon is a veterinary medicinal product containing the active substance Ivermectin, belonging to the category of Endectocides and more specifically Avermectins. It is marketed in Italy by the company Acme S.r.l..
Avalon may be prescribed with RNRVD prescription - Non-repeatable veterinary prescription Legislative Decree 218/2023.
one 7.49 g syringe contains: Ivermectin: 18.7 mg/g.
Indicationstreatment of infestations by nematodes or arthropods due to: large strongyles (Strongylus vulgaris (adults and larval stages L4 [arterial]), Strongylus edentatus (adults and larval stages L4 [tissues]), Strongylus equinus (adults)); small strongyles (including benzimidazole-resistant strains) (Cyathostomum spp (adults and luminal larval stages L4), Cylicocyclus spp. (adults and luminal larval stages L4), Cylicodontophorus spp. (adults and luminal larval stages L4), Cylicostephanus spp. (adults and luminal larval stages L4), Gyalocephalus spp. (adults and luminal larval stages L4); ascarids (Parascaris equorum (adults and luminal larval stages L5)); pinworms (Oxyuris equi (adults and larval stages L4); onchocerca (Onchocerca spp (microfilariae); diptera responsible for gastric myiasis (Gasterophilus spp (oral and gastric stages)).
Contraindicationsdo not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients. Do not use in dogs or cats, as severe adverse reactions may occur.
Dosageoral administration. One syringe notch of paste per 100 kg body weight (based on the recommended dose of 200 [7:m]g of ivermectin per kg body weight). The total contents of one 7.49 g syringe (seven notches) correspond to the dose for a 700 kg equid. To ensure administration of the correct dose, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible. To ensure swallowing, the animal’s mouth must not contain food. Turn the threaded indicator on the syringe plunger according to the indicated body weight corresponding to that of the equid to be treated. Insert the tip of the syringe barrel into the interdental space (the gap between the front and back teeth) and deposit the paste at the base of the tongue. Advance the plunger fully, depositing the product at the base of the tongue. To ensure swallowing, immediately raise the equid’s head for a few seconds.
Warningssome horses heavily infested with Onchocerca microfilariae have shown oedema and itching following administration of the product, which are thought to have been caused by the death of large numbers of microfilariae. These signs disappear within a few days, but symptomatic treatment is advisable. Care should be taken to avoid the following practices, as they increase the risk of resistance development and may ultimately render therapy ineffective: too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics of the same class over a prolonged period; underdosing, which may be due to underestimation of body weight or incorrect administration of the product. Suspected clinical cases of anthelmintic resistance should be further investigated using appropriate tests (e.g. faecal egg count reduction test). Where the result(s) of the test(s) clearly indicate resistance to a particular anthelmintic, an anthelmintic belonging to another pharmacological class and with a different mode of action should be used. To achieve adequate parasite control and reduce the likelihood of anthelmintic resistance developing, seek veterinary advice on appropriate dosing programmes and proper stock management. In case of suspected lack of efficacy of the product, it is recommended that the animal owner seek veterinary advice. Resistance to ivermectin has been reported in Parascaris equorum. Therefore, use of this medicinal product should be based on local epidemiological information (regional, farm level) regarding the susceptibility of these helminth species and on recommendations on how to limit further selection for anthelmintic resistance.
Special precautions for use in animals: since ivermectin has a high affinity for plasma proteins, particular care should be taken in cases of sick animals or in nutritional conditions associated with low plasma protein levels. Do not allow dogs and cats to ingest spilled paste or have access to used packaging due to potential adverse effects related to ivermectin toxicity. The product has been formulated for use exclusively in horses. The ivermectin concentration of this product may cause adverse reactions in cats, dogs (especially Collies, Old English Sheepdogs and related breeds or crosses) and also turtles and tortoises, if they are allowed to ingest spilled paste or have access to used syringes.
not applicable. The product must not be administered to equids intended for human consumption. For equids not intended for the production of food for human consumption (NDPA)
